How to Clean Ultrasound Transducers

Making sure your transducers are clean is extremely important as is for any piece of medical equipment. Every ultrasound should come with specific manufacturer’s instructions that should be followed. Generally speaking though, transducers should be cleaned after each use and have a basic cleaning method. Soap and water or quaternary ammonium sprays or wipes should be used to clean it. The transducers should always be detached from the ultrasound scanner before you start cleaning. Running water should be used on it to remove any leftover gel or other materials that may have attached themselves to the transducer. From there you should scrub the transducer with soap and a soft cloth or brush. Next rinse the transducer under running water again and dry it off. Lastly, you want to inspect the transducer to make sure it is clean if you see that this is not the case, repeat the process. Additionally, you should check to make sure there are no loose wires, defects or damage. If so, you should have the device repaired or replaced. Under no circumstance should you use any medical equipment that is damaged or defective, regardless if it is still working or the damage appears superficial. You should always air on the side of caution or you could possibly be endangering your patients.
