Transducers
ALPINION’s innovation begins with transducer technology
ALPINION’s research and development in medical transducer technology ranges from advanced diagnostic ultrasound transducers – both PZT and single crystal material, innovative and unique processing technology, and application-specific acoustic designs – to treatment transducers specialized for use with HIFU.
In the ultrasound field, ALPINION has developed the largest variety of single crystal transducers, including convex, volume convex and phased array transducers.
Different Ultrasound Transducers Provide Several Advantages
The transducer sends sound waves into the body and receives echoes in return. The device will send those echoes to a computer, which will convert them into a 2D or 3D image — called a sonogram.
Although most transducers are designed to work by rubbing the device over the body, some of them will be designed to fit through an opening in the body like the rectum or vagina. As technology continues to develop and improve, so do the probes used with ultrasound machines.

There will be four significant types of ultrasound transducers — linear probes, curvilinear probes, phased array probes, and endocavitary probes. Let’s take a look at the primary functions of each probe:
- Linear Probes – this probe is typically used for vessels and superficial structures in the body. They are generally high-frequency probes.
- Curvilinear Probes – generally used for transabdominal images due to the wider aperture and lower frequency.
- Phased Array Probes – another probe that uses lower frequency, but this one has a much narrower aperture. The near-field resolution is typically poor.
- Endocavitary Probes – these probes are designed to fit in the patient’s rectum or vagina to take a look at someone from the inside.
There’s new ultrasound technology being invented every year. They continue to make doctors more accurate and effective while also helping the patient receive a more clear diagnosis. As these machines continue to see improvements, they’ll only become more prominent in modern-day medicine — but only if you find the right ultrasound machine for sale.
At Integra Medical Systems, we are always standing on the front line as new technology comes out. We offer a variety of different ultrasound machines for various applications, as well as a wide range of ultrasound probes. Are you in the market for a new transducer? Do you know what this part of an ultrasound system does? Here at Integra Medical Systems, our team is here to explain everything you need to know about these devices. We take pride in offering the best ultrasound transducers on the market. Located in Miami, we specialize in all sorts of premium ultrasound equipment.
What Is An Ultrasound Transducer?
An ultrasound transducer converts electrical energy into mechanical (sound) energy and back again, based on the piezoelectric effect. It is the hand-held part of the ultrasound machine that is responsible for the production and detection of ultrasound waves.
The ultrasound transducers differ in construction based on:
- Piezoelectric crystal arrangement
- Aperture (footprint)
- Frequency

Crystal/ceramic Element With Piezoelectric Properties
- Usually lead zirconate titanate (PZT)
- May consist of a single component or be a broadband transducer with multiple elements
- Element thickness is determined by what resonance frequency is desired
Positive and Ground Electrodes on the Faces of the Element
- This allows for electrical connection
- A positive electrode is in the back of the element
- A ground electrode is on the front of the element
Damping (Backing) Block
- Adhered to the back of the crystal
- Absorbs ultrasound energy directed backward and attenuates stray ultrasound signals from the housing
- Dampens the resonant vibrations in the element which creates a shorter spatial pulse length; this allows for better axial resolution but higher bandwidth
Matching Layer
- Interface between the transducer element and the tissue
- Allows close to 100% transmission of the ultrasound from the element into the tissues by minimizing reflection due to traversing different mediums
- Achieves this by consisting of layers of material with acoustic impedances that are between soft tissue and transducer material.
Housing
- electrical insulation and protection of the element
- includes a plastic case, metal shield, and acoustic insulator
